Chapter Twenty-Seven
Nancy, her gran and Jonathan left the B&B with Thomas saying he would be in touch if he had any news on Nathanâs whereabouts. It seemed unlikely that he would have gone to his London flat, as it would be far too easy for the police to find him, but Nancy thought it would be tricky to find somewhere to disappear if you didnât know the local area.
âI imagine it must be quite a shock to realise someone youâve known for so many years could be capable of murder,â Nancy mused as they walked back to Jonathanâs car. âDo you think it really was Nathan?â
âHe did take off when he saw the police, and he was the one who bought that copy of the book found on Michael,â Jane said, shaking her head.
âItâs strange though,â Nancy said as they climbed back into Jonathanâs car. âIf Nathan killed Michael to copy the murder in Thomasâs book, you would have thought he would have left out the clue that catches the murderer in the book. To do the same thing seems so, well, to put it bluntly, stupid. Itâs led the police straight to him.â
âMaybe it was a spur of the moment thing, an impulse when he realised the murder scene matched the book? A chance to gain even more publicity? Maybe he didnât think that there would be someone there to point it out, like you did,â Jonathan said with a grin as they pulled away from the B&B.
âBut he must have known Thomas would work it out, surely. As soon as he saw the scene of the crime, Thomas knew it matched the one in his book, like I did.â
âMaybe he didnât think Thomas would say anything. They have worked together for so long, right?â
âBut that would only be the case if Thomas knew or guessed Nathan was the killer and he seems to have only realised that he might be today, along with us,â Nancy said.
Jonathan frowned. âYouâre right, it does seem crazy to do the same thing as the killer does in that book as heâs found out in the end.â
âExactly.â Nancy sighed. She was very confused. Nathan had the opportunity for sure, and she definitely had had her suspicions of him right from the start, but it seemed like a massive mistake for him to have made. She couldnât deny the fact though that heâd run off when he saw the police, which most certainly indicated he was involved in some way.
âIâd better head home after Iâve dropped you off and speak to my editor, make sure weâre on top of this development and everything. Everyone is going to go nuts when they realise Thomas Greenâs agent is the suspected killer,â Jonathan said.
âWhy do you think he did it, Nancy?â her gran asked her.
âI keep wrestling with his motive,â Nancy said. âDid he kill Michael because he was threatening Thomas, and Nathan wanted to protect his client? Or did he do it to gain more publicity for Thomasâs book? Or a combination of the two.
